TMCC-NFA honored Professor Beth Humphrey with its 4th annual Legacy Award during the member recognition dinner on May 20th.

Recognized for embodying the spirit of the Nevada Faculty Alliance through her years of steady support for TMCC-NFA, Humphrey's contributions go far beyond attending meetings; she consistently volunteers her time for chapter initiatives.

Beth’s recent efforts include serving on the negotiating team for the 2022–25 TMCC-NFA contract and participating on this year’s Collective Bargaining Council. She is a reliable presence at our campus forums, chapter meetings, and social events, always showing up to support her colleagues.

Known for being kind, fair-minded, and deeply committed to the principles of academic freedom, shared governance, due process, and free speech, Beth provides an excellent model of service for our campus community.

Nearly 30 faculty and family members participated in the member recognition event this year, including the three prior Legacy Award recipients - Blisin Hestiyas, Mark Maynard, and Julia Hammett.

With only one candidate for each office, the election of new TMCC-NFA officers wasn't much of a cliffhanger. Nearly 40% of Local 6766 members voted in the recent uncontested TMCC-NFA election to show strong support for their incoming leaders. On July 1st, Amy Cavanaugh will step into the role of chapter president, with outgoing president Jim New continuing to serve as past-president. The rest of the new Executive Committee includes Vice President Olga Mesina, Secretary Haley Orthel-Clark, and Treasurer Chris Jones.

- COLLECTIVE BARGAINING -

Board of Regents to vote on TMCC-NFA Contract at June 11-12 meeting

TMCC-NFA encourages faculty to show their support for collective bargaining during the public comment period of the June 11-12 Board of Regents Meeting at UNR when the Regents will vote on the 2026-31 TMCC-NFA Contract. TMCC faculty ratified the new contract with 79% overall approval. This includes support from 81% of union members and 75% of non-members.

If approved by the Board, most of the provisions of the new agreement will take effect on July 1st, including increased stipends for Department Chairs and Accredited Program Leaders, improved equity for administrative faculty, librarians, and counselors, and stronger intellectual property protections for faculty. Some provisions, such as annual increases to summer teaching pay rate based on the Higher Education Price Index (HEPI) will take effect in the 2027 summer session.

Paul Davis appointed to PEBP governing board

Paul Davis

Upon the recommendation of the NFA Government Affairs Committee, Nevada Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager recently appointed long-time TMCC Political Science Professor Paul Davis, Ph.D., to the Public Employees Benefits Program (PEBP) governing board. Davis becomes one of 11 board members who oversee health and voluntary benefits for state employees, retirees, and local governments. They set policy, approve plan designs, ensure financial solvency, and select benefits vendors.

At his first meeting on May 21st, Davis pointed out that NFA representative Kent Ervin spoke during public comment to challenge the Board on transparency and fiscal responsibility. Ervin specifically called out the completely redesigned PEBP FY2026 Q3 Budget Report, claiming the new format makes it difficult to track the agency's recovery from its financial crisis. Davis credited Ervin's prior analysis of PEBP budgeting for calling attention to the crisis and redirecting the Board's attention toward effective solutions.
