TMCC-NFA recognizes Cheryl Cardoza for decades of dedicated service
|
The end of the 2024-25 academic year also brings about the end of an era for TMCC-NFA. Cheryl Cardoza is entering the last weeks of her career as an English professor at the college en route to a well-deserved retirement.
During her tenure, Cheryl has served in multiple leadership roles, including as the Faculty Senate Chair, the Chair of the NSHE Council of Faculty Senate Chairs, President of TMCC-NFA, and Treasurer of the Nevada Faculty Alliance State Board.
|
Cheryl's impact on the working conditions for TMCC faculty will be felt for years to come due to her work as a negotiator in multiple rounds of collective bargaining, including as lead negotiator. Her efforts directly led to systemic improvements, such replacing the outdated office hours practice with more flexible and effective student support hours, clarifying the role of department chairs, refining classroom observation procedures, and strengthening the grievance process, just to name a few. She is a tireless defender of faculty rights and shared governance, and we are honored to have been associated with her.

3rd annual Legacy Award to be presented
|
Like last year, we will use the year-end Happy Hours to recognize the multiple achievements of our members from the 2024-25 academic year, including the 3rd annual Legacy Award presentation.
The TMCC-NFA Legacy Award was created in 2023 to honor one member who consistently represents NFA values in service to their students, colleagues, and profession, in areas such as academic freedom, shared governance, employee rights, collective bargaining, etc. NFA members submit nominations for the award each year. Recipients are announced during our year-end event and honored with a desktop award, and $500.

Members reminded to wear NFA stoles with their commencement regalia
|
TMCC-NFA urges all faculty members to participate in commencement on May 10 to honor the accomplishments of our students. We also encourage chapter members to march in full regalia with the addition of the NFA satin stoles to demonstrate solidarity with their coworkers.
Most members should have already received their stoles either in their membership packets, or from prior commencements. If you have not received your stole, TMCC-NFA officers will have them available in the robing area prior to the commencement ceremony.
